The Handbook of Reading Comprehension presents an overview of recent findings on reading comprehension and comprehension problems in children. It provides a detailed examination of the characteristics of children who have reading comprehension difficulties, and examines ways in which comprehension can be supported and improved. It is accessibly written for students and professionals with no previous background in the psychology of reading or reading problems.

This indispensable handbook asks the question ‘what is comprehension?’ The authors consider comprehension of different units of language: understanding single words, sentences, and connected prose and outline what readers (and listeners) have to do to successfully understand an extended text. This book also considers comprehension for different purposes, in particular reading for pleasure and reading to learn and explores how reader characteristics such as interest and motivation can influence the comprehension process.

Different skills contribute to successful reading comprehension. These include word reading ability, vocabulary knowledge, syntactic skills, memory, and discourse level skills such as the ability to make inferences, knowledge about text structure, and metacognitive skills. About the Author
Kate Cain, DPhil, is a Reader in the Department of Psychology at Lancaster University. Her research and publications focus on the development of language comprehension in children, with a particular interest in the skill deficits that lead to comprehension problems. Dr. Cain's recent journal articles report investigations into the relations that exist between children's reading comprehension and their inference-making skill, knowledge of narrative structure, interpretation of figurative language, vocabulary-learning mechanisms, and memory processes. She is an Associate Editor of the "International Journal of Language and Communication Disorders "and the "Journal of Research in Reading,"
Jane Oakhill, DPhil, is a Professor of Experimental Psychology at the University of Sussex. Since completing her doctorate on the topic of children's problems in reading comprehension, she has worked on various research projects--including deductive reasoning in children and adults, circadian variations in human performance, and adult language comprehension--but has always maintained a research interest in children's reading comprehension, particularly individual differences. Dr. Oakhill has published widely on children's reading comprehension. In 1991 she received the British Psychological Society's Spearman Medal; she was elected to a Fellowship of the Society in 2005.

Get this if you teach children to read!

This is a helpful, up-to-date review and explanation of research on reading comprehension that is easy to understand.

Too often when researchers write books, they are written for other researchers and it is difficult for teachers, school administrators, and parents to wade through the technical information to get to the "good stuff." This is a rare and welcome exception. These three authors have been leaders in the field of reading comprehension research for decades. This volume provides the fruits of those efforts in an easy-to-read fashion. It should be read by all those who teach our children to read. Highly recommended!
