Surprisingly biased

I was very surprised when I started reading this book to see how heavily it leans to one side in a very complex conflict. Martin Gilbert is an outstanding historian and Routledge a very well-respected quality publisher and I am at a loss to understand what happened in the publication of this book. Far from the neutral observations you'd expect in an Atlas, whatever the topic, it repeatedly uses very emotional language and cherry-pick facts to suit the story. I strongly recommend other books by Martin Gilbert, such as his Atlas of the Jewish people, but this one is a fail in an otherwise distinguished career.

Following over twenty years of war, Sri Lanka’s longest cease-fire (2002-2006) provided a final opportunity for an inclusive peace settlement between the Sri Lankan government and the Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam (LTTE). However, hostilities resumed with ever increasing desperation and ferocity on both sides, until the LTTE were overcome and largely eradicated in 2009.

This book provides a contextualised analysis of the effects of war on a small Tamil community living in northern Sri Lanka during the cease-fire period. It examines how the society changed and adapted in order to accommodate the upheaval and destruction of war, and its inevitable resumption. In particular, it focuses on the nature of suffering through an exploration of a well-known ritual: Thuukkukkaavadi that transformed the experience of pain and suffering and contributed to a process whereby many village communities could come together in a demonstration of strength and resilience.

It contributes to studies on violence, reparation processes of so-called ‘post-conflict’ societies and the medical anthropology of healing. It questions assumptions concerning the nature of suffering and critiques the application of western categories in settings like northern Sri Lanka, where entire communities have been silenced by political violence. The book therefore presents a claim for more culturally specific understandings of what constitutes suffering and is of interest to students and scholars of South Asian Studies, Conflict Resolution, and Social and Cultural Anthropology.

Psychological View of the Terrorist Personality.

How and why does someone become a terrorist? Are there common causes? Is there a terrorist personality?

For the first time I've seen, a senior psychologist has approached the concept of terrorism with a view to trying to understand what makes the mind of the terrorist work. Only with a greater understanding of every aspect of terrorism will we be able to work out the techniques that will enable the world to effectively fight it.

The author has conducted research that considers terrorism as a process and exploring three distinct phases of the making of a terrorist: becoming involved, remaining involved (or being a terrorist), and then leaving terrorism behind.

Despite the ongoing search for a terrorist personality, the most insightful and evidence-based research to date not only illustrates the lack of any identifiable psychopathology in in terrorists, but demonstrates how frighteningly 'normal' and unremarkable in psychological terms are those who engage in terrorist activity.

Teresa Brayshaw is Director of Performing Arts at Leeds Metropolitan University. She teaches, directs and performs in a wide range of international performance contexts, and is co-editor of Training Grounds, located within the international journal Theatre, Dance and Performance Training.

Noel Witts is Emeritus Professor of Performing Arts at Leeds Metropolitan University, and was the founder and first Director of the Department of Performing Arts at De Montfort University. This excellent English-Russian Russian-English medical dictionary expertly fills a void in the medical translation market. At a time when globalization, technology, and new budgetary realities are causing rapid change in the medical field, this dictionary is both timely and prescient. With 601 pages devoted to English-Russian and Russian-English word translation, 75 pages devoted to a full spectrum of medical phrase translation, and three appendixes covering abbreviations and prefixes/suffixes, this is a dictionary no medical library or bilingual professional in the field should be without.

Great for medical interpreters!

I highly recommend the English-Russian Russian-English Medical Dictionary and Phrasebook by Yuliya Baldwin to any medical interpreter. This dictionary has every conceivable medical word that you might use during an office visit. I also like that Russian terminogy has stresses, makes it easy to pronounce. This book also has a lot of extra stuff in the Appendixes like bilingual phrases for history chief complaint, medical history, medical insurance terms, review of systems, medications, signs and symptoms, medical tests, ...the list goes on and on.

bad mistake

I bought this dictionary for my studying to become a medical interpreter and at first when I got it I was very excited, because it has a lot of words, very useful phrasebook at the end and even prefix and suffix appendix. BUT I found a very bad mistake, not a typo, it is a mistake-if you look up term "kidney function test", in translation you will find a LIVER function test!!!!!! It is bad.
Now I don't know what i should do...Can I return it after having it for so long..??
I think I should have trusted old tested dictionaries.

About the Author
Kate Cain, DPhil, is a Reader in the Department of Psychology at Lancaster University. Her research and publications focus on the development of language comprehension in children, with a particular interest in the skill deficits that lead to comprehension problems. Dr. Cain's recent journal articles report investigations into the relations that exist between children's reading comprehension and their inference-making skill, knowledge of narrative structure, interpretation of figurative language, vocabulary-learning mechanisms, and memory processes. She is an Associate Editor of the "International Journal of Language and Communication Disorders "and the "Journal of Research in Reading,"
Jane Oakhill, DPhil, is a Professor of Experimental Psychology at the University of Sussex. Since completing her doctorate on the topic of children's problems in reading comprehension, she has worked on various research projects--including deductive reasoning in children and adults, circadian variations in human performance, and adult language comprehension--but has always maintained a research interest in children's reading comprehension, particularly individual differences. Dr. Oakhill has published widely on children's reading comprehension. In 1991 she received the British Psychological Society's Spearman Medal; she was elected to a Fellowship of the Society in 2005.

Get this if you teach children to read!

This is a helpful, up-to-date review and explanation of research on reading comprehension that is easy to understand.

Too often when researchers write books, they are written for other researchers and it is difficult for teachers, school administrators, and parents to wade through the technical information to get to the "good stuff." This is a rare and welcome exception. These three authors have been leaders in the field of reading comprehension research for decades. This volume provides the fruits of those efforts in an easy-to-read fashion. It should be read by all those who teach our children to read. Highly recommended!

About the Author

Peter Ozolins, PhD established his architectural practice (www.peterozolinsarchitect.com) in 1998 after more than 20 years’ experience as an architect in Africa, the Middle East and the U.S. During a 9 year residence in Madagascar and Tanzania he designed education and health-related projects for a variety of non-governmental organizations. He has also done consulting work for USAID, UNESCO and NGO's in various African countries, Iraq and Nepal. His U.S.-based work includes university, commercial and residential projects as well as continued overseas work. Peter Ozolins earned his PhD from Virginia Tech in Environmental Design and Planning, is a member of the American Institute of Architects and is a LEED accredited professional with the US Green Building Council.

With the ‘Asian Century’ now upon us, bringing with it many profound economic and political changes to the world order, it is very timely to assess the state of democracy in the Asian region. Focusing on Eastern Asia, this book provides such a review, highlighting lines of connections between the states and peoples of this complex and dynamic region.

Featuring chapters on China, Japan, Taiwan, South Korea, Hong Kong, Indonesia, Malaysia, Singapore, Thailand, the Philippines, Cambodia, and Myanmar, this book provides a detailed analysis of the state of democracy in each country or territory, and shows how each is different and distinctive, whilst simultaneously drawing out important similarities. Further, it provides up to date analysis of political changes in the region relating to the processes of democratization, and, in some cases, to the ongoing quest for democracy. Critically examining the current state of political development in the region, the chapters explore the issues and problems that challenge the region’s governments in terms of democratic transition, democratic consolidation, democratic improvement and good governance.

With contributions from leading international scholars, this book will be of great interest to students and scholars interested in Asian politics, and politics and democratization studies more broadly.

Edmund S. K. Fung is Professor of Asian Studies at the University of Western Sydney and a Fellow of the Australian Academy of the Humanities.

Steven Drakeley is a Senior Lecturer in Asian and Islamic Studies and a member of the Religious Studies Research Centre at the University of Western Sydney, Australia.
