About the Author

Christine Nash is currently Deputy Head of the Institute for Sport, Physical Education and Health Sciences at the University of Edinburgh in Scotland, UK, and also Programme Director for the new online MSc in Sport Coaching and Performance. She was a national swimming coach in the UK and has coached in the USA. She is currently involved in supporting coach education with a variety of sports. She is a member of the Coaching Standards Group, the committee that endorses coach education courses in the UK. About the Author

Jenny Edkins is Professor of International Politics at Aberystwyth University. Prior to joining the Department as Leverhulme Special Research Fellow in 1997, she taught at the University of Manchester and the Open University. She co-edits the successful textbook Global Politics: A New Introduction, now moving into its second edition, and has published six other books, including most recently: Missing Persons, Missing Politics (Cornell, 2011); Trauma and the Memory of Politics (Cambridge, 2003) and Whose Hunger? Concepts of Famine, Practices of Aid (Minnesota, 2000).

Adrian Kear is Professor of Theatre and Performance at Aberystwyth’s Department of Theatre, Film and Television Studies. About the Author

Nitya Rao is Senior Lecturer at the School of International Development at the University of East Anglia, UK. She has over 25 years experience as a field-level practitioner, trainer, researcher and teacher. She has worked extensively in the field of gendered land relations, and her book Good Women do not Inherit Land: Politics of Land and Gender in India was published in 2008. She has also been involved in researching, from a gender perspective, issues of livelihoods and economic growth, with a focus on migration, education, resource access and social identity, with a particular focus on South Asia.

The book analyses the place of such subjectivities in relation to theories of gender, gender diversity and sexuality.

About the Author

Since the collapse of the Soviet Union, both the Russian state and Russia's Muslim communities have struggled to find a new modus vivendi in a rapidly changing domestic and international socio-political context. The book provides an up-to-date and broad-ranging analysis of the opportunities and challenges confronting contemporary Muslim communities in Russia that is not confined in scope to Chechnya or the North Caucasus, and which goes beyond simplistic characterisations of Muslims as a 'threat'. But the use of rights defence strategies by private citizens, and lawyers also demonstrates changing power structures – in areas as diverse as private property rights, rights for the handicapped, corruption claims and grievances with officials. In this book, Jonathan Benney argues that the idea of rights defence has gone from being a tool of the government to being a tool to attack the party-state, and explores the consequences of this controversial activist movement.
