About the Author

John P. Dourley is Professor Emeritus, Department of Religion, Carleton University, Ottawa, Canada (1970–2001). He is a practising Jungian analyst, a graduate of the Zurich programme, 1980. He has written widely on Jung and religion. His previous works include Paul Tillich, Carl Jung and the Recovery of Religion (Routledge, 2008) and On Behalf of the Mystical Fool: Jung on the Religious Situation (Routledge, 2010). He is also a Catholic priest and a member of the religious order the Oblates of Mary Immaculate.

This book is an absolutely fantastic tool for anyone looking to improve their performance practice

This book is an absolutely fantastic tool for anyone looking to improve their performance practice. Bryon writes with a rare balance of academic rigor and a conversational tone, making the book accessible to me on a variety of levels. The book is filled with some extremely helpful and innovative exercises that can be done in solo work or with a partner. I found the diagrams that accompany each exercise particularly helpful when trying them out on my own. I have been working with the exercises for six months and I already feel like my practice comes from a place of awareness. When sharing this work with my students and colleagues, many of them were surprised how much working from a place of awareness or shifting their center to the perineum changed the way they practice and perform for the better (as was I). With the aid of Integrative Performance, I no longer see myself as an actor who sings and sometimes dances. I see myself as a performer, and that shift has made a world of difference for my practice.

About the Author

Jacob Meerman, a Chicago Ph.D. in economics, is a Scholar in Residence at American University, Washington D.C. He has held several academic positions, most recently as visiting professor at the National University of Malaysia. During his quarter century with the World Bank, he carried out a pioneering study of who benefits from government expenditure and has extensive experience in developing projects including the main trunk highway in Bolivia, irrigation in Madagascar, and export crops in Rwanda.

Why don't low status ethno-racial groups catch up?

No one has reviewed this book, so I,the author, am. The book concentrates on excluded low-status stigmatized minorities, i.e.former slaves, outcastes, conquered peoples deprived of homeland, etc. These groups are without power, usually undereducated, and always victims of their fellow citizens. The book asks why these groups remain at the bottom of their social hierarchies as the poorest of the poor, even in wealthy democracies long committed to equal opportunity. Four causal factors are mainly at work: obviously discrimination; lack of opportunity in pre-industrial nations; poor education; and traumatic cultural heritage that induces behavior conflicting with minority upward mobility. I spent much effort in cross-disciplinary compilation and analysis of empirical work in sociology, history, law, some psychology and much economics showing how these forces work and interact. On the basis of this work I concluded that the resulting four variable "mobility model" is universally applicable to the planet's entire population of some hundreds of such low-status, stigmatized, ranked, ethno-racial groups (including numerous indigenous peoples in developing countries). The bulk of the book, however,consists of case studies that apply the model to the mobility history of US African-Americans, Cuba's Afro-Cubans, Japan's Burakumin, the Dalits (Untouchables)of India, and Bolivia's highland Indians. The five case studies also compare actions by governments and the minorities themselves to overcome barriers to progress, including mass protests, road blocks, kangaroo courts, litigation, legislation, affirmative action,job quotas, etc. Part of what I find valuable about the book, in this very overgrazed field, is my apparently unique cross-disciplinary approach. It has paid off in much improved analysis. But what I found most valuable was the conclusion that the plight of the socially excluded (as defined in the book)always has similar causes, a finding that I did not expect but was forced to accept. I have aspired to rigorous reasoning throughout but have largely avoided jargon. I have just re-read the book (more than two years after publication) and found it very engrossing. Particularly the case studies.

Kindle edition a waste of money

I opted for the kindle editon because I did not want to carry the thick paperback volume around. Big mistake. The search function does not work on the kindle (it does work however if I read the book on my Mac.) The worst is the font size. None of the Chinese characters used throughout the book can be enlarged for easier or more comfortable reading, and much of the English text happens to be embedded with the hanzi, so you cannot enlarge it either. Especially in the Answer key, the fonts are so small you really need a magnyfying glass to read it at all!!!
I think this is unfair. It should be clearly stated on the website so that people know what not to expect (all you excpect from a normal kindle edition: search functions that actually work, font resize functions, etc.) I would certainly have abstained from buying it or would have gone for the paperback edition instead. A ripoff.

As long as you like Pinyin, you'll like this Grammar Book

This is one of the few Chinese Grammar books written in English for the English speaker studying Chinese. AND, it contains both the simplified characters used on the Mainland as well as the traditional characters used in Taiwan and a few other places. The book is comprehensive and has an excellent index. The only thing keeping it from a five-star rating is the errors of fact it contains in various statements about how Mandarin is being used in Taiwan. For example, page 9, section 2.4 states that some characters lose their original tone and are changed to neutral but only on the Mainland and never in Taiwan. I cannot speak for the Mainland but the tone change is most certainly current in Taiwan. (Ref: Taiwan National Normal University, Mandarin Training Center where I am studying.) There are a number of other errors of this kind.

Ridiculously simple

I really felt that this workbook was a waste of money. There's no substance any to the exercises. Most of them are fill-in-the-blank where you choose one of four or five words, and all based on what you studied in the last two or three pages in the textbook. A kindergartner could do this.

About the Author

Kathrina Simonen is an Assistant Professor in the Department of Architecture at the University of Washington. Licensed as both an Architect and Structural Engineer, her research agenda stems from unresolved questions originated during over 15 years of professional practice. Her research topics include life cycle assessment (LCA) and practice innovations such as prefabrication, digital manufacturing, and alternative project delivery models. She is founding director of the Carbon Leadership Forum, an industry/academic research collaborative focused on linking the science of life cycle assessment to industry best practices in order to help enable quantifiable reduction of the environmental impact of the built environment.

this is perhaps the best summary of LCA I've read. Kathrina takes a very complex subject and explains it in plain english, simply and clearly. Its written by an architect for architects to read. Definitely worth the price if you need a very good 101-401 summary in a thin, easy to read pocket book format.
