Antonia Schleicher is Professor at the Department of African Languages and Literatures at the University of Wisconsin-Madison and Director of the National African Language Resource Center there. She is the author of Je K'A Ka Yoruba, the main US textbook for the language.

Great Book, Bad Narrator, Don't Buy without the CD's

This book is great for beginners and has a very logical format. It's a good complement to Beginner's Yoruba (Hippocrene Beginner's Series) by Kayode J. Fakinlede. Just don't buy it without the CD's. This particular item is sold WITHOUT the audio CD's and is basically useless without it! Amazon currently doesn't have the CD's for sale at all so I recommend purchasing the book and CD's pack from B&N. Another word of caution, the narrator introducing the dialogues and lessons has a HORRIFIC Yoruba accent. He isn't a native speaker--he sounds British--and he butchers any Yoruba word that passes through his mouth. It is very distracting when you're trying to listen to CDs to IMPROVE your accent!

oh my GOD, words cannot describe the way i feel about this book! IM IN LOVE. i've learned more in one day then i have all my years of living. i would recommend this book to anyone who is SERIOUS about learning this language. i am a Nigerian my self and i did not know my language, and no one had the time to teach me so i bought this book. THE BEST DECISION EVER! on a scale 1-10 i rate this book 100.

PLEASE BUY THE ONE THAT COMES WITH THE CD! it will be more helpful. they sell that one on amazon as well, it comes packed together and its around 40-50 dollars. yeah its a little costly but its worth it. ive learned so much and its been like 3 days already. i can finally have a conversation in yoruba!

I ALSO RECOMMEND BUYING A YORUBA DICTIONARY. they sell those on amazon as well. i recommend "modern practical dictionary yoruba-english, english to yoruba" by kayode j fakinlede. the price is from 14-25 dollars. its a great investment.

a very well done introduction

It was a very pleasant surprise to discover this really thorough and well-prepared introduction to Yoruba. The author has addressed all of the difficulties of learning the language that English speakers are likely to encounter- the tones and many elisions in the everyday spoken language are a particular sticking point for most learners- and an excellently crafted pair of CDs provides invaluable listening practice. The dialogues and comprehension exercises that accompany every chapter are not only lively and interesting, but also provide an unsparingly honest view of life in Yoruba land, contemporary Nigeria, and of the lives of Nigerians living in America. All in all a great value.

The Martha Rivers Ingram Professor of English and Professor of Comparative Literature at Vanderbilt University, Vera M. Kutzinski has written widely on the literatures of the Americas. She co-edits (with Ottmar Ette) the University of Chicago Press series Alexander von Humboldt in English. Her forthcoming book is titled Modernisms in Motion: Langston Hughes and Translation in the Americas.

The main emphasis however is on both qualitative and quantitative interpretation by comparing and combining reactors with and without diffusion and mass transfer effects, complemented with several examples and exercises. Finally, non-ideal and multiphase systems are presented, as well as specific topics of biomass thermal processes and heterogeneous reactor analyses. The work closes with a unique section on the application of theory in laboratory practice with kinetic and reactor
experiments.

I find this book very useful, in particular, from the point of view of a physical chemist whose expertise in reaction engineering is limited. Due to the familiar treatment of kinetics, this books represents an excellent entry into chemical engineering also for practitioners in other fields.

The didactic approach of the book allows one to enter easily into the field. It will be of great value for students, both undergraduate and graduate, not only in chemical engineering but also in other fields. It should not be missing on any chemical institute libraries’ shelf.

About the Author

Martin Schmal graduated in Chemical Engineering at the Engineering Faculty of the Catholic University of S. Paulo (1964), he received a Master’s degree in 1966 from the Federal University of Rio de Janeiro/COPPE, Brazil, and obtained his doctorate degree (Dr. Ing.) from the Technische Universität Berlin, Germany (1970). He became an associate professor at the Chemical Engineering Department of the Federal University of Rio de Janeiro in 1970, became Full Professor in 1985 and has been Emeritus since 2008. He specialized at the Institut du Recherche sur la Catalyse, Lyon, France (1981) and at the University of Karlsruhe, Germany (1983).

He has been teaching Kinetics and Reactors to undergraduate students at the Chemical Engineering School, Catalysis to graduate students at COPPE and a Postgraduate course in Engineering for over 40 years, since 1973.

The main research topics at Nucleous of Catalysis are catalysis, the catalytic process and nanoscience. He maintains close contacts with the industry, in particular with Petrobras and various petrochemical industries: Oxiteno, Copene, Copesul, Petroquimica União, Braskem, Degussa and others, developing processes and catalysts, and has more than 20 patents to his name.

He is a member of the Brazilian Academy of Science (elected in 1999) and of the International Catalysis Society (since 2000). He has received several awards and in particular the Humboldt Research Award from the Humboldt Foundation – Germany (2002), the Premio Mexico for Science and Technology (Science Consulting Council, Mexico, 2002); the Senior Researcher award from the Ibero-American society (2010); the SCOPUS award – Elsevier-CAPES (2009) and finally the Distinguished Professor award from Coppe – Federal University of Rio de Janeiro (2013). He has published more than 220 articles in international journals; has presented and published 250 papers in Annals of International Congresses, Symposia and Meetings and published the following books: Chemical Kinetics and Reactor Design (1. Ed. 1982, 2. Ed. 2010), Heterogeneous Catalysis (2012) and Natural Gas Conversion VIII – Surface Science (2011).

His other activities include being peer reviewer for the following journals: Journals for Physical Chemistry, Journal of Catalysis, Surface Science, Applied Catalysis A and B, Catalysis Today, ACS Catalysis, Angewandte Chemie International Edition, Catalysis Letters, International Journal of Hydrogen Energy, Material Science, etc. He was on the editorial board of Applied Catalysis A (1992–1999) and of Catalysis Today (2000–2006). He was Founder and President of the Brazilian Catalysis Society (1998–2006).

His external collaborators include H.J. Freund (Max Planck Berlin), E. Lombardo (Argentina), Schlögl and Behrens (Max Planck Berlin), Albert Vannice (Penn State University, USA) and Ted Oyama (Virginia Tech, USA).

In 2003, the EU deployed its first external mission under the European Security and Defence Policy (ESDP) with a military force to the former Yugoslav Republic of Macedonia. Since then it has instigated over 18 civilian and military missions to deal with humanitarian crises all over the world. This book presents a series of eight case studies of external interventions by the EU covering the Balkans, Africa, the Middle East, Afghanistan and Indonesia, to illustrate the nature of the EU as a global actor. Using the concept of human security to assess the effectiveness of these missions in meeting the EU’s aim of being a ‘force for good in the world’, this study addresses two key issues: the need for an empirical assessment of EU foreign and security policies based on EU intervention in conflict and post-conflict situations and the idea of 'human security' and how this is applied in European foreign policy.

This book will be of great interest to students of European Security, EU politics, human security, post-conflict reconstruction, and IR in general.

Bringing together scholars from all over the world, this volume draws upon multi-disciplinary theoretical perspectives, extensive fieldwork and activists' experience, and explores the ways in which reconciliation connects with issues like civil society, gender, religion, tradition, culture, education, history, displacement and performance. It covers different areas of Indonesia, from Aceh in the West to the Moluccas in the East, and deals with a broad variety of conflicts and violence, such as communal violence, terrorist attacks, secessionist conflicts, localized small-scale conflicts, and the mass violence of 1965-66. Reconciling Indonesia offers new understandings of grassroots or bottom-up reconciliation approaches and thus goes beyond prevalent political and legal approaches to reconciliation.
