This book challenges scholarship which presents charity and voluntary activity during World War I as marking a downturn from the high point of the late Victorian period. Charitable donations rose to an all-time peak, and the scope and nature of charitable work shifted decisively. Far more working class activists, especially women, became involved, although there were significant differences between the suburban south and industrial north of England and Scotland. The book also corrects the idea that charitably-minded civilians’ efforts alienated the men at the front, in contrast to the degree of negativity that surrounds much previous work on voluntary action in this period. Far from there being an unbridgeable gap in understanding or empathy between soldiers and civilians, the links were strong, and charitable contributions were enormously important in maintaining troop morale. This bond significantly contributed to the development and maintenance of social capital in Britain, which, in turn, strongly supported the war effort. This work draws on previously unused primary sources, notably those regarding the developing role of the UK’s Director General of Voluntary Organizations and the regulatory legislation of the period.

About the Author

Roberto Swazo, PhD, is an associate professor and coordinator of the counselor education program at Florida Agricultural and Mechanical University in Tallahassee, Florida. In addition to teaching, Dr. Swazo is a frequent speaker at professional conferences, and conducts workshops throughout the United States and abroad on multicultural issues and psychobilingual training for schools and mental health agencies. Pretty awesome tool to supplement your Spanish

This was a really awesome resource. Lots of useful Spanish terminology and phrases. I think it would have value if you didn't speak a lot of Spanish or if your client has limited skills in whatever your primary language is. I'd definitely suggest having some Spanish ability higher than basic Beginner before attempting to use this book's spansih due to the ethical dilemmas that you'd face doing counseling in a language you aren't fluent in. But that's all outside the book itself, which is great, even with intermediate Spanish skills.
The only con was buying the Kindle edition (awesome price) and having no access or information about the companion website mentioned in the text. No audio for me :/

About the Author

N. John Habraken is a Dutch architect and educator. He served as Founding Director of the SAR Foundation, Founding Chair of the Department of Architecture and Urban Design at Eindhoven Technical University, and Professor and Head of the Department of Architecture at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, where he is currently Professor Emeritus. Habraken is the recipient of many awards worldwide, notably including honorary membership in the Architecture Institute of Japan. He is the author of numerous books including Supports: An Alternative to Mass Housing, The Structure of the Ordinary: Form and Control in the Built Environment, and Palladio’s Children. He is also co-author of Variations: The Systematic Design of Supports.

Andrés Mignucci is a Puerto Rican architect and urbanist. He studied architecture at the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee and subsequently at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, where he received a Master of Architecture degree in 1982. In 1988, he founded Andrés Mignucci Arquitectos in San Juan, Puerto Rico. His work has received numerous design awards including the National Architecture Prize in 2001 and 2002 and the Henry Klumb Prize in 2012. He teaches design at the University of Puerto Rico, is the author of books including Arquitectura Contemporánea en Puerto Rico 1976-1992, and, Contexts: Parque Muñoz Rivera and the Puerto Rico Supreme Court. Mignucci is a Fellow of the American Institute of Architects.

Jonathan Teicher is an American designer and writer. He holds a Master of Architecture degree from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology and Bachelor and Master’s degrees in Comparative Literature from Washington University. He has received awards for his architecture and urban design teaching and served as national Coordinating Director of Education at the American Institute of Architects. Mr. Teicher has practiced architecture and urban design in the US, France, Japan and Australia, winning awards for projects including a dog house in San Francisco, a Chinese cultural center in Boston and a 9-building complex on the Pennsylvania State University campus. His has previously edited three architecture books by John Habraken.

Idea Book for Learning Mandarin Chinese

I found this book amazing for learning Chinese or as a reference guide! The book has both traditional & simplified Chinese characters. This is very helpful since you should be familiar with both. The reader is exposed to every aspect of the language: parts of speech, sentence structure, addressing letters & envelopes, greetings, apologies, sympathy, new words for current technology (fax, email, internet etc.) just to name a few! I was very happy to use this book which satisfied all my expectations. I would highly recommend this book to anyone serious about learning Chinese. I would also recommend the book as a reference guide for those who already know Chinese.

I am the author of the Michel Thomas courses to learn spoken Mandarin. Innovative approaches to language teaching is one of my passions. So I am always on the lookout for texts and resources to support me in my journey.

I have used most of the Chinese grammars out there. This is far and away the best. The entire series is outstanding. Why? Because it's totally practical without getting stuck in grammatical obscurities. It reflects the actual, contemporary use of the language as it is used by ordinary, educated speakers.

The first half of the book reviews all aspects of the grammar in a user-friendly way. The second half of the volume deals with how to express anything you could wish to say in contemporary Chinese using the patterns of the language as would a native speaker.

Over the time I spent designing cutting edge courses for English ( and now also French) speakers to really learn to speak Mandarin in the least amount of time this book was one of my most valuable resources. I cannot recommend it enough.

What I have found is that I continue to return to Modern Chinese Grammar year after year and am always happily surprised with its simple explanation of potentially complex topics.

The book is exactly what one should expect -- a reference on Chinese grammar. It is concise, yet thorough and easy to understand. It is very well organized, too.
