About the Author

Dr Jordan has been a theatre practitioner for over thirty years, touring throughout Europe and elsewhere, performing in English, Italian and Cantonese. He was a founder member of the Fortunati and an actor with TAG Teatro of Venice. He has variously acted in, directed and translated plays by Goldoni, Ruzante, Molière, Marivaux and Shakespeare. As an instructor, he has worked at a number of leading drama schools and universities, and was for many years Head of Acting at the Hong Kong Academy for Performing Arts. Apart from his acting and directing credits, his professional portfolio also includes fight direction, movement choreography, script development, musical performance and composition. His productions have toured to Canada and Australia. In recent years, he directed and composed for award-winning versions of Les Misérables, Cyrano de Bergerac and Friedrich Dürrenmatt’s The Visit, as well as directing the world premiere of Ho Chi Minh in Hong Kong.

Homosexuality and the European Court of Human Rights is the first book-length study of the Court’s jurisprudence in respect of sexual orientation. It offers a socio-legal analysis of the substantial number of decisions and judgments of the Strasbourg organs on the wide range of complaints brought by gay men and lesbians under the European Convention on Human Rights. Providing a systematic analysis of Strasbourg case law since 1955 and examining decades of decisions that have hitherto remained obscure, the book considers the evolution of the Court’s interpretation of the Convention and how this has fashioned lesbian and gay rights in Europe. Going beyond doctrinal analysis by employing a nuanced sociological consideration of Strasbourg jurisprudence, Paul Johnson shows how the Court is a site at which homosexuality is both socially constructed and regulated. He argues that although the Convention is conceived as a ‘living instrument’ to be interpreted ‘in the light of present-day conditions’ the Court’s judgments have frequently forged and advanced new social conditions in respect of homosexuality. Johnson argues that the Court’s jurisprudence has an extra-legal importance because it provides an authoritative and powerful discursive resource that can be mobilized by lesbians and gay men to challenge homophobic and heteronormative social relations in contemporary societies. As such, the book considers how the Court’s interpretation of the Convention might be evolved in the future to better protect lesbian and gay rights and lives.

Ruth Mazo Karras is Professor of History at the University of Minnesota. She has published widely on the history of women, gender, and sexuality in the Middle Ages. Her books include Unmarriages: Women, Men, and Sexual Unions in the Middle Ages (2012), From Boys to Men: Formations of Masculinity in Late Medieval Europe (2002), Common Women: Prostitution and Sexuality in Medieval England (1998) and Slavery and Society in Medieval Scandinavia (1988). She is a co-editor of the journal Gender and History.

Fantastic

This was a very well written books that I really enjoyed. This was well documented and gave an excellent, easy to understand summation of medieval thought. It also often ties into modern sexual practice and customs. This book is great to pair up with R. Howard Bloch's "Medieval Misogyny and the Invention of Western Romantic Love," if you are looking into Medieval Gender Studies. I purchased this book both for my own pleasure and for graduate research.

Very detailed like a textbook

Enjoyable reading, and educational. She went into so much detail that it felt more like a textbook, but obviously
a LOT of research went into this book. My wife and I enjoy the time period, and attend many Renaissance Faires, so found this part of that time period most interesting.

Karras manages to walk the line between taking the academic disputes in her field seriously, and addressing them, and also being reasonable and sensible about which strands she actually will use. This is one of my favorite works of academia and is THE go-to for medieval sexuality.

Against this background, the book concludes with an argument for the inherent metaphysical dimension of political theorizing itself. Goodfield takes Hegel’s reception, representation, as well as rejection in Anglo-American scholarship as a mirror in which its metaphysical presuppositions of the political are exceptionally well reflected. It is through such reflection, he argues, that we may begin to come to terms with them.

Monna Arvinen-Barrow is a British Psychological Society chartered psychologist working as an Assistant Professor at the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee, USA. Monna has a number of peer reviewed publications in psychology of sport injuries and has taught psychology of sport injuries in the United Kingdom, United States and Finland.

Natalie Walker is a British Psychological Society chartered/Health and Care Professions Council registered psychologist working as a Senior Lecturer at the University of Northampton, UK, and an Associate Lecturer at the Open University. Natalie has written a number of publications, as well as examining and supervising postgraduate/doctoral research in the area of psychology of sport injuries.
