In doing so this book challenges the conventional wisdom on a number of fronts by showing young people’s political engagement to be much more complicated than many of the stereotypes suggest (in both good and bad ways).In this way, this book provides a report card on young people’s political engagement in the twenty-first century.

It explains, in a clear and comprehensible manner, how we stay comfortable by using our bodies, minds, buildings and their systems to adapt to indoor and outdoor conditions which change with the weather and the climate. The book is in two sections. The first introduces the principles on which the theory of adaptive thermal comfort is based. The second explains how to use field studies to measure thermal comfort in practice and to analyze the data gathered.

Architects have gradually passed responsibility for building performance to service engineers who are largely trained to see comfort as the ‘product’, designed using simplistic comfort models. The result has contributed to a shift to buildings that use ever more energy. A growing international consensus now calls for low-energy buildings. This means designers must first produce robust, passive structures that provide occupants with many opportunities to make changes to suit their environmental needs. Ventilation using free, natural energy should be preferred and mechanical conditioning only used when the climate demands it.

This book outlines the theory of adaptive thermal comfort that is essential to understand and inform such building designs. This book should be required reading for all students, teachers and practitioners of architecture, building engineering and management – for all who have a role in producing, and occupying, twenty-first century adaptive, low-carbon, comfortable buildings.

About the Author

Fergus Nicol has led a number of important research projects on comfort which have influenced thinking internationally. He has authored numerous journal articles and other publications including guidance on comfort and overheating. Fergus convenes the Network for Comfort and Energy use in Buildings and organises their regular international Windsor Conferences.

Michael Humphreys is known for his pioneering work on the adaptive approach to comfort. He has been Head of Human Factors at the Building Research Establishment, and a Research Professor at Oxford Brookes University. His current interests are the structure and modelling of human adaptive behaviour, the interactions between aspects of the environment, and their expression in standards.

Susan Roaf did her PhD on comfort and the windcatchers of Yazd, and after a decade working with Nicol and Humphreys at the Oxford Thermal Comfort Unit she is now Professor of Architectural Engineering at Heriot Watt University in Edinburgh. She is a teacher, researcher, designer and author and editor of 13 books including Ecohouse: A Design Guide and Adapting Buildings and Cities for Climate Change.

I would recommend this book to anyone with an interest in thermal comfort research and looking to learn more about conducting a field study with test subjects. The book effectively describes the current state of thermal comfort research, including thorough citations, and recommendations for research methods and analysis. As a young researcher in this field, I refer to this book for reference in statistical modeling and recommendations for field studies. Humphreys and Nicol have been researching thermal comfort for decades and their wealth of knowledge is evident in this publication.

Branko Kolarevic is an Associate Professor of Architecture and founder of the Digital Design Research Lab (DDRL) (www.gsfa.upenn.edu/ddrl) at the University of Pennsylvania. He has authored, edited, or co-edited several books, including Architecture in the Digital Age: Design and Manufacturing, published by Spon Press in 2003. He is the past President of the Association for Computer Aided Design in Architecture (ACADIA).

Ali Malkawi is Associate Professor of Architecture at the University of Pennsylvania. Founder and former coordinator of the Augmented Reality Group at the University of Michigan, he currently heads the Building Simulation Group at Penn.

Ka Ho Mok is the Chair Professor of Comparative Policy, Director of the Centre for Greater China Studies and Acting Vice President (Research and Development) of The Hong Kong Institute of Education (HKIEd). He also serves as Changjiang Chair Professor of Zhejiang University, a distinguished national chair professorship conferred by the Ministry of Education in China since 2010.

Kar Ming Yu is an Assistant Professor with the Department of Asian and Policy Studies at HKIEd and is concurrently Director, Associate Degree Studies of the Faculty of Liberal Arts and Social Sciences at HKIEd.

Traditionally engaged as neutral court appointed evaluators or mediators, or as treatment providers for children, parents or families, FMHPs are assuming a range of consulting functions. Services span a wide range, including providing expert testimony on specific content areas; reviewing and critiquing colleague’s work product; providing behind the scenes consultation to attorneys, and even help attorneys manage difficult cases and clients. These more recent services raise questions about sound professional practice. This volume tackles these thorny issues head on, and discusses questions how consultants can work creatively and ethically to make a positive contribution in the challenging world of family law.

S. Margaret Lee, Ph.D. maintains a clinical and forensic practice in Mill Valley, California devoted to divorcing families. Services include custody mediation and evaluation, training, co-parent counselling, expert testimony and consulting with attorneys.
