The book provides a detailed account of the appearance of Robinson Crusoe in the economics literature and in a plethora of modern economics texts, in which, for example, we find Crusoe is portrayed as a schizophrenic consumer/producer trying to maximize his personal well-being. Using poststructuralist, feminist, postcolonial, Marxist and literary criticism approaches, the authors of the fourteen chapters in this volume examine and critique some of the deepest, fundamental assumptions neoclassical economics hold about human nature; the political economy of colonization; international trade; and the pervasive gendered organization of social relations.

The contributors to this volume can be seen as engaging in the emerging conversation between economists and literary scholars known as the New Economic Criticism. They offer unique perspectives on how the economy and economic thought can be read through different disciplinary lenses. Economists pay attention to rhetoric and metaphor deployed in economics, and literary scholars have found new areas to explore and understand by focusing on economic concepts and vocabulary encountered in literary texts.

Ulla Grapard is Associate Professor at Colgate University, USA, where she teaches economics and women’s studies. A founding member of IAFFE, the International Association For Feminist Economics, her research concerns feminist critiques of economic theory and practice from a postmodern perspective.

Gillian Hewitson is a Lecturer in the Department of Political Economy at the University of Sydney, Australia, where she teaches in feminist economics, heterodox economics and the political economy of development. Her research is located at the intersection of feminist economics, postcolonialism and economics and the history of economic thought.

Insights on contemporary Kyoto society

Brumann’s study of Kyoto’s unique social structure, concepts of tradition and citizens’ reaction to the construction of high-rises in old neighborhoods is thorough and insightful. He dispels the common notion of group-think among Japanese by his command of the language and by focusing on the interaction with the residents of one particular “cho” (neighborhood district). Refreshingly accurate, this is an invaluable primer for those interested in studying Japanese society.

The first provides historical background, showing the effects upon the educational system of Rome’s transition from a predominantly agricultural community to a great metropolis; it traces the development of primary, grammar and rhetoric schools, and discusses educational standards both in early Rome and under the Empire, when advanced teaching was more widely available, but often adversely affected by weakening social values and diminished parental control. The volume goes on to describe the physical conditions of teaching – accommodation, equipment, discipline, the economic position of teachers and the fee-paying system, and the part played by the State. Finally, he gives a full appraisal of the standard teaching programme, from the elementary study of the three Rs, to the theory and practice of rhetoric, in which the needs of the future advocate were constantly borne in mind.

The legislative frameworks for the delivery of child welfare services to Indigenous children are assessed in terms of the degree of self-determination which they afford Indigenous communities.

The book draws upon interdisciplinary research and the author’s experience collaborating with the peak Australian Indigenous children’s organisation for over a decade to provide a thorough examination of this international issue.

Alsayyad argues that our understanding of the city cannot be viewed independently of cinematic experience. Films do not only capture the depiction of a society; they influence the way we construct images of the world and, as a result, how we operate within it. We are beginning to blur the distinction between what is real in the everyday, and how we imagine the everyday. Cinematic Urbanism explores this dynamic, bringing together insights from urban and film studies to illuminate current architectural debate.

About the Author

Nezar AlSayyad is Professor of Architecture, Planning and Urban History at the University of California at Berkeley. He is the Associate Dean for International Programs at the College of Environmental Design, and Chair of the Center for Middle Eastern Studies at Berkeley. Additionally, he is the Director of the International Association for the Study of Traditional Environments and principal editor of its journal, Traditional Dwellings and Settlements Review.

Amazing book

This is simply an amazing book, very nicely written about a interesting subject. It shows how in the 21st century, we will probably experience the city more through the Virtual media than through the conventional "real" one. It demands of us to adjust to this major change in life and culture.
